How to use hair rollers for volume and remove them gently

How to use hair rollers: Blow-dry your hair until dry or nearly dry, divide it into sections and roll each warm section from the ends towards the roots. Let the rollers cool, then gently unwind them one at a time. Do not pull them straight through the hair.

This method uses the Brushworks ceramic thermal rollers, set of nine. They have a self-grip nylon surface and a ceramic core. They are not heated electrically: heat comes from blow-drying, and the hair sets as it cools around the rollers.

Choose a size for the shape you want

The set contains three rollers in each size: 60, 48 and 35 mm. The larger rollers suit root lift at the crown and front. The smaller ones create a more defined bend where you want extra shape. The result also depends on hair length, texture and preparation.

How to put in hair rollers, step by step

  1. Prepare your hair. Gently detangle it and blow-dry until dry or nearly dry. The rollers work best while the section you are shaping is still warm from styling.
  2. Divide it into sections. Take a section no wider than the roller. Smaller, even sections are easier to roll towards the roots.
  3. Roll from the ends. Lay the ends evenly against the roller and roll towards the scalp with light, even tension. For the large rollers at the front, roll away from your face if you want lift at the roots.
  4. Keep them in place. The self-grip surface helps hold each roller. If you need more support, use a separate roller clip or pin; these are not included in the set. Brushworks says you can give the rollers one final brief blast of heat with a hairdryer.
  5. Let them cool. Brushworks recommends at least 20–30 minutes before removal. Check that the hair and rollers have cooled before you begin.

Three steps with hair rollers: divide hair into narrow sections, roll from the ends and gently unwind after cooling

Section, roll up and unwind. In the final step, turn the roller along the section instead of pulling it straight down.

Always follow the instructions for the hairdryer or any other heat tool you use.

How to remove hair rollers without pulling

Start with a roller that has cooled completely. Hold the hair section close to the roller and slowly turn the roller in the reverse direction from when you put it in. Let the hair release a little at a time. Brushworks instructs users to carefully unwind each roller.

If a strand catches on the Velcro surface, stop, release the tension and gently free that strand with your fingers before continuing. Do not yank the roller straight through your hair. Wait until all rollers are out before brushing through; shape with your fingers first if you want to keep the waves.

Common questions about hair rollers

Are these ceramic thermal rollers the same as electric heated rollers?

No. This Brushworks set has a ceramic core that takes up heat from blow-drying, but it has no electric heating unit. It is used differently from electric rollers that heat in a dedicated appliance.

Can self-grip rollers get caught in hair?

Yes. A self-grip surface can catch loose strands, especially if a section is tangled or the roller is pulled straight out. Detangle before styling, work with even sections and gently unwind each roller. If one catches, pause and free the strands one at a time.

How long should I leave them in?

For this set, Brushworks recommends at least 20–30 minutes and letting the rollers cool before removal. Timing may vary with the hair and preparation; hair that has not cooled has not had the same chance to set its shape.

Can I use them as heatless rollers?

They can hold a section in place, but the manufacturer's method for this set relies on blow-drying and cooling. We would not promise a heatless result from them. To compare other tools, browse our hair accessories and styling tools.

After use

Remove loose hair from the rollers' surface. If needed, gently wipe them with a dry or slightly damp cloth and let them dry completely before storing. Do not soak them. Keep them clean and dry, away from direct contact with hot styling plates or open flames. This follows the care information for the actual product sold by Beauty Shelf Studio.
